Tropical island of Captiva hosts world's most scenic triathlon

The sub-tropical island of Captiva on Florida's Gulf Coast is known for its natural beauty, abundant wildlife and laid back island atmosphere, making it an unlikely contender for a triathlon. However, every year the region takes advantage of its spectacular beauty and holds one of the world's most scenic triathlons. The 2014 triathlon will be held on 14 September and costs from £45 for individuals to enter.
 
Captiva is tiny at just five miles long and half a mile wide and is one of Florida's hidden gems. With strict laws against overdevelopment and no buildings taller than the tallest palm tree, there are no eye sores and nature has been allowed to flourish. Triathlon contenders will be able to enjoy the islands beauty on a ¼ mile swim around the northern end of the island, a ten mile bike ride along Captiva's coastal roads and a 5km run. Following the triathlon, visitors can relax on Captiva's pristine beaches, which have the world's best shelling, and enjoy fishing, snorkelling and kayaking. Off the beach, Captiva's main street, Andy Rosse Lane is lined with colourful boutiques, art galleries and a beachfront English pub, The Mucky Duck. For eating out, head to the renowned Bubble Room, a treasure trove restaurant designed around 20th century antique toys and vintage Hollywood memorabilia.
