Fuji Oil to end production at typhoon-wrecked Philippine plant

OSAKA -- Japan's Fuji Oil said Thursday it will no longer produce coconut oil on the Philippine island of Leyte since its factory there was severely damaged by a storm last fall.

A plant operated by subsidiary New Leyte Edible Oil Mfg. was almost completely destroyed by Typhoon Haiyan last November. The company judged rebuilding the facility to be too difficult, as the surrounding area is littered with rubble even now and a lengthy recovery effort will likely be necessary.
