A moderate earthquake measuring 4 on the Richter scale struck the coastal town of Sechura, in northern Peru’s Piura region, early Thursday.
Peruvian Geophysical Institute, or IGP, said the tremor occurred at 03:03 local time (08:03 GMT) and was unnoticed by residents.
The quake’s epicenter was located at 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) southwest of Sechura, at a depth of 36 kilometers (22.3 miles).
According to Civil Defense authorities, there have been no reports of damage or injury so far from the quake.
Peru lies in the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, which is the site of 85 percent of global seismic activity caused by friction between shifting tectonic plates.
