Report: Grant Hill not interested in becoming Pistons’ general manager

If the Pistons’ two permanent coaching hires under owner Tom Gores are any indication, they’ll take their time hiring a general manager to replace Joe Dumars. All indications are Gores believes in a lengthy and thorough process.

So, when names emerge as candidates – like Grant Hill and Scott Perry did yesterday – it doesn’t necessarily mean much. There’s a wide gulf between being considered and legitimate interest – from either side.

Vincent Goodwill of The Detroit News:

Hill, though, has told people close to him he won’t consider a front-office position this close to retirement, but down the line when his children get older, he would consider it.

Hill might be saving the Pistons from themselves. Learning how to run a franchise with no front-office experience can’t be easy, and as wise as Hill is, I’m not sure he’d be up to the task.

If Hill wants to pursue this path in coming years, he can begin preparing in informal – and less-demanding – roles now. But it seems best for everyone he not become a general manager so soon.
