Johannesburg is not only South Africa's economic hub - its residents are more likely to buy online than those of other cities.

A survey conducted by kalahari.com this month showed that Joburgers are more inclined to shop online, followed by Durbanites and then Capetonians.

Kalahari.com marketing manager Kirby Gordon said: "Johannesburg has the highest percentage of people shopping on the site on a monthly basis relative to the population of the city. Residents are 1.3 times more likely than Capetonians to shop online."

He said Capetonians had embraced buying items on mobile devices but the rest of the Western Cape had not.

The survey also found that:

KwaZulu-Natal has the highest tablet traffic and the fastest shoppers.

Boksburg residents take three times longer than the average Joburger to shop.

Alice in the Eastern Cape and Mafikeng in North West had the fastest-growing community of online shoppers.
