A controversial plan to build a gravel pit near Conestogo has been struck down by the Ontario Municipal Board.

In a decision announced Wednesday, the OMB ruled that the potential for negative effects on the surrounding area was too strong for them to allow Hunder Development’s proposed pit at the corner of Katherine Street and Hunsberger Road, east of Waterloo.

“It’s fabulous news for all of us,” Woolwich Mayor Todd Cowan tells CTV News, who credits the response from nearby residents as a major factor.

“It’s been a lot of fundraising on their part. This has been a long battle.”

The battle over the 400-acre site began seven years ago, with many neighbours opposing the developer every step of the way.

A zone change necessary for Hunder’s proposal was denied by the township, citing non-conformity to its official plan.

Unhappy with that decision, Hunder took its case to the OMB, which made its decision earlier this week.
