Openers Shubhman Gill and Nirmal Singh were involved in a 587-run stand for Mohali against Amritsar in the Inter-district Under-16 tournament for the ML Markan Trophy.
According to Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) spokesperson Sushil Kapoor, the stand bettered the existing record of 561 runs for the first wicket between Waheed Mirza and Mansoor Akhtar in the match between Karachi Whites and Quetta at the National Stadium, Karachi, in 1977.
Shubhman made 351 and Nirmal scored 267 at the Mohali Cricket Association (MCA) training ground. Shubhman reached his triple century in 272 balls, with 49 fours and two sixes. Nirmal Singh, overnight on 231, added 36 runs before being dismissed on Wednesday. Nirmal’s knock included 35 fours.
Even while accounting for the relatively smaller boundaries — 40 to 45 yards — the effort was special. The MCA ground, located behind the PCA stadium, was a municipal corporation park before it was converted into a practice facility for budding cricketers.
The PCA conducts its age-group games at the Yadavindra Public School ground, which is much bigger but it is available only during the weekend.
Mohali declared their first innings on 681 for 8 in 142 overs on Day Two. In reply Amritsar were 281 for five in 72 overs.
