BOKARO: Hemlata S Mohan, a candidate of All Jharkhand Students' Union (Ajsu) Party from Dhanbad, is wooing women voters who are terrified of chain snatchers in the region.
Mohan, who is ex-chairperson of State Women's Commission, is all out to curb crime against women. During her door to door campaign she expressed dissatisfaction at the poor governance in the state which has caused a spurt in such incidents.
Mohan appears to be the first such candidate who has taken up local issues specially those that bother women. Of the 32 candidates in fray, three are women contenders. Apart from Mohan, the two are independents. While Ajsu Party has it own voter base, Mohan is also trying hard to win the confidence of women voters.
Mohan manifesto focus more on local problems including women safety, city lacking higher education, displaced issues, delay in construction of Chas Bridge, water arrangement in Chas, pollution, industrial development and others of which people are sufferers. Mohan in her campaign says that she understand the problem more thoroughly than any other candidate because she is one among them.
She also ensures people that unlike other leaders, she has got enough guts and brain to fight and overcome the issues if she got elected. Mohan said that chain snatching incidents have rock the town since past three-four years. The situation is this that women have virtually left wearing gold ornaments fearing of being targeted by miscreants.
"Ironically the policemen rather than taking any serious step in ending the crime are seen advising women to avoid coming on road wearing gold ornaments. The house theft is also common things. More than 100 women have been targeted in past couple of years. There are many who avoided lodging FIR fearing legal hurdles or losing confidence on policemen. I feel the pain and will stand with women to curb the crime. Strict and transparent administration is need of the hour," said Mohan during a meeting here.
