Heart Institute teams with JAAA

The local governing body for track and field in Jamaica, the JAAA, and the Heart Institute of the Caribbean, have signed a four year contract worth $10 million to conduct medical examinations on national athletes before they represent the country overseas.

This follows the untimely death of the St. Jago High School athlete Cavahn McKenzie, who collapsed after the NACAC cross country event in Tobago on February 22.

Sixty-six of the 84 athletes travelling to this weekend's Carifta Track and Field Championships in Martinique have already been examined.

Founder and CEO of the Heart Institute of the Caribeban, Dr Ernest Madu, intends to ink more deals with other sporting associations.

The Heart Institute will also be offering seminars to the nation's coaches, a move welcomed by   Neil Harrison, Head Coach of Jamaica's Team to the Carifta Championships.
