TV artiste held for house theft

Sujatha, alias Nagalakshmi, 40, a television serial actress out on bail, was arrested by Rajarajeshwarinagar police in a theft case.

She has acted in serials Mangalya and Rangoli and Kannada film Matha. Her friend Kavitha, whom the police suspect is also involved, is at large. Sujatha, who was running a chit fund business, allegedly took to house thefts to overcome financial crunch.

The two would approach owners of posh houses, introducing themselves as television serial artistes looking to rent residences for shooting.

When the families were out, they would break in and decamp with valuables, police said.Parvathamma, a resident of Rajarajeshwarinagar, lodged a complaint with the police a month ago about the theft of sarees, silver and golden articles. She suspected the involvement of Sujatha.

Sujatha, who had been jailed for similar offences, had obtained bail recently. The police, who took her into custody, interrogated her and she reportedly confessed to the crime. They recovered 50 gm gold and 400 gm silver articles from her.

A host of local residents approached Rajarajeshwarinagar police and lodged complaints of similar house thefts. 

The police suspect the duo might have been involved in similar cases in Channammanakere Achchukattu, Chamarajpet and Kamakshipalya areas.

Cook hangs himself

A 30-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his house in Subramanyanagar police limits on Monday night. The deceased has been identified as Kumar, a cook and a resident of Gayathrinagar 8th cross, police said.

On Monday night, Kumar returned home in an inebriated state. He picked a quarrel with his wife over a petty issue and went to bed.

However, when Kumar’s wife got up at 4 am, she found her husband missing. When she entered the hall, she saw Kumar’s body hanging from the ceiling fan. There was no death note, police said. The body was shifted to M S Ramaiah Hospital for post-mortem.
