TEMPO.CO, Cairo - General Abdel Fatah el-Sisi can easily run for Egypt's next president for elections in May 2014. A legal adviser of Sisi said that the former army chief gained 200,000 signatures delivered to the election commission on Monday, April 14, 2014.
Candidates must get at least 25,000 signatures from 27 provinces in Egypt to run for the elections in May 26 and 27.
Sisi is expected to become the first one to deliver the list of supports to the commission and continue to campaign in Cairo. "It is a unique example of support and national backing," Sisi's campaign said.
Hamdeen Sabahi, a left-wing politician, will become Sisi's main opponent. Sisi is, however, expected to win as he has gained huge support from all over the country since the ousting of President Mohamed Morsi nine months ago.
European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, said on Monday, that the EU would sent an obverver to oversee Egypt's presidential elections.
