Cinema and music in the South is technically very advanced: Sohail Sen
Composer Sohail Sen, whos set to make his Tollywood debut with the Telugu remake of the Hindi hit OMG - Oh My God, gets talking with Hyderabad Times
Youll be composing for a Telugu film for the first time. What made you take up the project? Yes, this is my first project down South and Im pretty excited about it. Firstly, the film stars Pawan Kalyan and Venkatesh and I am a big fan of them.
Ive grown up watching their films, especially Venky sirs movies, the dubbed ones. And secondly, I had liked the original film OMG - Oh My God a lot. The film gives you a reality check and its entertaining. The makers of the Telugu remake had approached me a couple of months ago and asked if Im interested in working on this project. For me,music has no boundaries and language has never been a hindrance. So, I immediately gave my nod. In fact, I was in Hyderabad to meet the makers and even met Venky sir who said he has a lot of expectations from me. Hes such a down to earth person.
Youre not conversant with Telugu. How do you plan to tackle the issue while composing? Like I said, music is music and it has no barriers. Hence, no worries at all! I feel cinema and music in the South is technically very advanced. So it would be exciting and fun to compose something really different. Also, the lyric writer understands Hindi well. So hell translate the words to me. Hell explain to me which word would or wouldnt sound right. Even the director of the film, Dolly, understands the essence of music. So thats an add-on. Im sure composing with him will be fun. There are some really great singers down South, and Im sure to give this project my best shot.
Whether its Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Ek Tha Tiger or the recently released Gunday, your songs have been fast paced and peppy. Can we expect something similar with the Telugu film? When I was in Hyderabad recently, I sat with the makers of the movie and heard the script. Trust me, there are a lot of changes from the original one. So, going by the script, the music will definitely be different from the Hindi version. And if the script demands, Ill compose some loud and peppy numbers too. At the end of the day, I can try my best and leave the rest to the audience.
Apart from composing you have also sung for a few films Well, I dont just concentrate on composing. I love singing too. Like in Gunday, apart from big singers like Bappi da and KK, the film had singers like Neeti Mohan, Shadab Faridi, Shahid Mallya and others. Yet it did well. I sang the title track and it was appreciated. I always like to experiment with new singers and sometimes I like going behind the microphone. So, I might sing for this Telugu film as well. Lets see how things shape-up.
