SURAT: Police, who successfully exposed the underworld's involvement in the firing incident in the city on March 28, suspect that Afroz Fatta, an accused in the Rs 700 crore hawala racket, was also in touch with an underworld gang.
However, the gang he was taking help from was different than that of the underworld don Babloo Shrivastava whose henchmen had pressed the trigger at land developer Amjad Dalal, mistaking him to be Fatta to recover Rs 150 crore from him.

Police are still examining Fatta's activities. His phone call details showed that he was in regular touch with individuals with strong underworld ties and based in various parts of the world, sources informed. "Preliminary investigation showed Fatta took help of his underworld connections to settle Rs 150 crore dispute which he owed to some people," sources in police claimed.
"Fatta's call details show that he was in touch with a few people in Mumbai, London and Dubai. These individuals are known to have links with key members of Dawood Ibrahim gang," a senior police officer said.
Before firing on Amjad Dalal, a lookalike of Fatta, the Babloo Shrivastava gang had made a few attempts to pressurize Fatta to return the money. Fatta had received a threat call on his phone and had also a bullet in a cover at his Mumbai residence.
Fatta was questioned after the firing incident and his associates also investigated. However, police are yet to announce their details officially. "To counter the help taken by Fatta from the underworld, those demanding money from him took the support of Shrivastava. The entire case will become clearer once the key accused Shrivastava, who took contract to recover money from Fatta, is arrested," the officer informed.
Questioned about the involvement of other people from the underworld in the case, police commissioner Rakesh Asthana, said, "We are investigating the case. Underworld's involvement has been found. But there seems to be a bigger conspiracy."
