KUCHING: Road users are appealing to the Public Works Department (PWD) to make necessary improvements on the road signs at Mile 6, near Kuching Sentral.

PKR women national vice president Voon Shiak Ni, who made the appeal on behalf of the road users, said the road users complained that the wordings on the road signs could hardly be read at night as they were not reflective.

“We observed that the road signs of this nature in other parts of Kuching such as in Pending area are visible at night and the wordings can be easily seen from a distance.

“But road users complain that they could only see the board and not the wordings at the Mile 6 road signs at night,” she said in a press statement.

Voon, who is PKR Stampin branch vice chairperson, said she would leave it to the PWD to study and make necessary improvement to the existing sign boards to enhance the visibility of the words at night.

“Road signs are of utmost importance to road users and if the road users miss the correct turning, they may have to make a big round to get back on track, especially for those who are not familiar with the roads here.”

In giving her suggestions for the road signs in the state, Voon said the wordings must be large enough and must be reflective at night.

“Besides that, road signs must be adequate especially at dangerous corners and sharp bends. We observed that there were not sufficient road signs all over the state.”

Voon also suggested to the PWD to put up phone numbers of the relevant authorities to enable road users to call if they witness any vandalism of road signs, especially along the trunk road.
