NAVI MUMBAI: Two prisoners who were feeling sleepless at night and therefore chatting with each other at Alibaug Jail in Raigad district were attacked by 10 other jail inmates who were reportedly disturbed by the duo's late night banter.
Alibaug police has lodged an FIR against 10 inmates for rioting inside the jail barrack who were later transferred to Taloja Jail in Navi Mumbai.
The two injured prisoners, Ravindra Bhagwan Das and Imran Sharif Ansari were hospitalised in Alibaug.
"Das, who is a rape convict, was feeling rather sleepless in the wee hours of Sunday, and therefore started talking to another inmate inside the jail barrack. Their chatting is said to have disturbed two notorious murder convicts, Devendra Ajit Gambjir and Mayuresh Ajit Gambhir, who then curtly asked the two to stop talking and go to sleep. However, this led to an altercation and then rioting as eight others joined in to beat them up,'' said a Raigad police official.
The district superintendent of police, Ankush Shinde, said that the jail authorities controlled the situation before it turned worse. Normally, in each jail barrack there are around 100 inmates. Further police investigation is on in the matter.
