TRICHY: Inflation and corruption are the two biggest achievements of the UPA government, which has severely brought down development in the country putting the labour force in difficulty and driving several people out of their jobs, Brinda Karat, CPM polit bureau member, said on Monday. She was speaking at the industrial town of Thiruverumbur in Trichy district where the Navaratna status BHEL is located, while canvassing for party candidate S Sridhar.
Brinda Karat said that several labourers have become jobless due to the industrial growth going down in the country for the past 10 years. "The country cannot go forward under the current regime, which has put the interests of the people behind," she said.
She also lauded the CPM MP Natrajan from Coimbatore for being the first to raise the issue of inflation and corruption in the country against the UPA. "It was comrade Natrajan who questioned the government in the Parliament when the issue of corruption was raised. The Left is the only party that always raise issues," said Brinda Karat. She also hit out at sitting MP from Trichy, P Kumar of the AIADMK for not raising any issue in the Parliament though the district was plagued with several problems, which was again highlighted by the CPM parliamentarians.
Though she spoke in English, which was translated by Prof Balu Athreya, a senior professor, Brinda Karat received wide applause from the gathering which primarily focussed on the plight of the labourers in the industrial town. "At least 300 ancillary units of the BHEL have been shut down and many people have gone jobless, which can all be sorted only if the Left comes to power," she said.
Brinda Karat also did not spare the BJP and said that the party is a mask of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which only propagates communalist ideologies in the country and equality will fade out. She criticised the BJP saying that the labour force will be completely suppressed if the party comes to power since it gives more rights to capitalists.
Earlier, Brinda Karat spoke addressed rallies at Alwarthope and Eda theru, Palakarrai in the city where a sizeable number of Muslims had attended. She charged that the BJP will only propagate communalist ideologies in the country.
