BT (News - Alert) IT Systems will be using the Enlogic upgradeable EnPowered PDU to enhance its data center assets. Enlogic has designed the new power distribution unit (PDU) to have all the features of a basic PDU, which is also easily upgradeable.
Customers can purchase a network management card (NMC), to upgrade the PDU’s intelligence level when required. This protects the initial investment when a customer wishes to upgrade the PDU. Enlogic can install the NMC easily without any downtime or new purchases. Enlogic’s intelligent range of PDUs feature a distributed intelligence architecture in the network management module, which enables easy field replacement even in working conditions.
As the PDU’s basic configurations are stored on the chassis’ motherboard with only limited intelligence in the component, this type of hot swap is possible, which saves a lot on time and costs.
Also the upgrade from an EnPowered to an intelligent PDU, along with a network management card (NMC) helps users to remotely access PDU information through an IP address. By using a single IP address, easy management is possible by daisy-chaining up to four PDUs. The software provides all information regarding the PDUs and the data center environment, thereby delivering precise updates on capacity, air flow and cooling to data center managers.
The EnPowered PDU features slim, heat-resistant magnetic circuit breakers which can withstand very high temperatures without tripping. The system allows the setting of parameters on the PDU, which will alert data center managers in case the parameters are over-shot, to prevent tripping of the circuit.
As all Enlogic PDUs are very slim, installers are able to fit the devices into the rack easily. Also the size eliminates the need to shut the power down when doing maintenance work, as the slim form factor does not obstruct the other components in the rack.
In 2012, Enlogic unveiled its pioneering energy-measuring device PDUs. This provides an effective solution to combat the energy waste challenge. The data center business is striving to follow stringent environmental laws to avoid paying penalties as governments are keen on reducing carbon emissions. With the acceleration in the technology demands, the need to be energy efficient has become more important than ever.
