Cops make 7th arrest in mulund trader's suicide

The Mumbai Crime Branch has made its seventh arrest over the suicide of a Mulund trader on Friday. The police on Sunday arrested Mukesh Gandha, 50, who had given loan to trader Bhavik Dand, 32, to buy material for his business. Gandha has been booked for abetting Dand's suicide.

Dand hanged himself at his Mulund residence, leaving behind a three-page suicide note in which he named Gandha and the six others who have been arrested by the Mulund police.

“We have the book in which Dand has written down all the transactions between him and the money lenders. All the accused have been arrested on the basis of the suicide note and his account books confirm that the transactions did take place. We have not been able to arrive at the exact amount that Dand took as a loan. The arrested accused claim that they gave the him money on a verbal agreement and expected monthly returns, which Dand was not able to pay,” said a crime branch officials.

The arrested accused are Gandha, Deepak More, 28, Jagdish Patel, 33, Laliji Punjani, 64, Razaak Abbas, 39, Mayur Palan, 34, and Jayanti Patel, 32.

Dand alleged all seven men harassed him over a loan of between Rs 15 lakh and Rs 20 lakh, which he claimed to have repaid with interest.

On March 16, Dand was kept confided in a garage at M G Road, Mulund, where he was stripped and beaten. He was given till March 20 to pay Rs 16 lakh, failing which he would be paraded naked in his neighbourhood.

“They leveled interest on daily basis. My brother had paid interest of Rs 1.25 crores. But the accused were asking for an additional Rs 20 lakh, which my brother didn’t have. He had sold a house to repay these money lenders,” claimed his brother Kalpesh Dand.
