1 dead as rival gangs clash in Bhayandar

One person was killed and another seriously injured when two groups clashed early on Sunday in Bhayander (East). Five youngsters, including a notorious criminal out on bail, have been arrested.

At around 1 am on Sunday, Gurudev Rajpure (24) and Pradeep Shinde (25) were returning to their Indira Nagar home in Bhayander (East).

On their way they met Vijay Singh, Shravan Khare, Akbar Badshah, all 20 years old, and Vikram Ghadge and Arjun Chavan, both 19. Singh, who is an accused in the December 2012 murder of Republic Party of India (RPI) youth leader Dilip Ingle, had been out on bail for a year.

The two groups, which had earlier clashed on Holi, got into a fresh argument on Sunday, following which Singh and his gang assaulted Rajpure and Shinde with iron rods. They sustained severe head injuries and were taken to a local hospital. Gurudev died on Sunday morning while Shinde's condition remains serious.

As news of the death spread, locals from Indira Nagar marched to the Navghar police. When the two gangs had clashed on March 17, the police registered a non-cognisable offence against Singh and let him off. Local residents said that had the police arrested him then, he would not have killed Rajpure.
