Fake AIIMS staffer guilty of duping patients: Court
NEW DELHI: A man who used to dupe patients at All India Institute of Medical Sciences on the pretext of arranging the “best and the earliest treatment” for them has been held guilty for the offence of cheating by a trial court. While convicting Surjeet Ram, the court held that he was not even an employee at AIIMS but used to cheat people by posing as a hospital staffer claiming to be “close to the doctors there”.
The court is likely to decide the quantum of sentence this week.
Metropolitan magistrate Bhavna Kalia was hearing a complaint filed by Syed Ahmed who was first cheated by Surjeet in January 2002 when he had gone to the premier hospital for the treatment of his nephew. His nephew had been suffering from a spinal disorder.
Surjeet told Ahmed that he facilitates patients by arranging easy appointments with doctors and getting medicines for them. The accused made the complainant believe that he was into “serving needy people” at AIIMS and therefore, kept taking money from Ahmed, the court said while convicting Surjeet.
In the name of offering hassle-free experience at AIIMS to Ahmed’s family, Surjeet kept charging money from Ahmed but never did he actually arrange anything for Ahmed.
This went on till March 2002 and Surjeet managed to dupe Ahmed of around Rs 2000. Surjeet was arrested on March 30, 2002 after Ahmed shared the matter with a doctor at AIIMS who subsequently informed police. Surjeet had duped many people in a similar manner.
“There is no doubt that there has been deceit on part of the accused. Surjeet Ram made the complainant believe that he could help the complainant get proper treatment for his nephew. He misrepresented to the complainant that he was working at AIIMS and therefore the complainant believed all that was said by the accused. The accused dishonestly induced the complainant to part with Rs 1,800 in the name of arranging medicines and other miscellaneous expenses,” the magistrate said.
