NEW DELHI: Traffic jams were reported from different parts of the city throughout the day due to religious functions. Officials said that though arrangements were made to avoid jams, heavy volumes of traffic near religious institutions caused the snarls.
Heavy traffic movement was reported near the churches around the city as a large number of worshippers had gathered to observe Palm Saturday.
By the evening, a procession led by senior officials of a church in Karol Bagh reached the Bara Hindu Rao Hospital church through DBG Road, Jhandewalan, Paharganj, Sadar Thana Road, Eidgah Chowk, Rani Jhansi Road, Delhi Cloth Mill, Azad market and Baraf Khana Chowk. Similar processions were taken out in parts of south Delhi as well.
Jams were also reported in the morning from Rani Jhansi Road, Pahari Dheeraj and Qutab Road due to Mahavir Jayanti celebrations. Many lanes got blocked for distribution of food by devotees till the afternoon.
Areas around Bhishma Pitamah Marg, Lodhi Road and Lala Lajpat Rai Marg near Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium witnessed heavy traffic in the evening due to a cultural programme attended by Sikh religious leaders and 30,000 devotees.
