Lokomotiv miss out on spot after statement
The railway-backed side and two time former champions are on 52 points from 25 matches.
MOSCOW (AFP) - Lokomotiv Moscow failed to take the chance to overtake Zenit St Petersburg and regain the Russian Premiership lead after being held to a goalless draw by Anzhi Makhachkala on Sunday.
The railway-backed side and two time former champions are on 52 points from 25 matches, one point behind Zenit, with CSKA Moscow in third on 49 points.
Lokomotiv dominated but squandered a hatful of chances.
Their manager Leonid Kuchuk said he wasn t upset with the stalemate.
"Today s draw is not a failure," Kuchuk remarked.
"Anzhi are serious opponents regardless of their position in the table. We added a point to our balance and it s a success.
"Of course we wanted to win but Anzhi defended really well while we missed too many chances today.
"We still have chances to win (the league ) - I believe the head-to-head clash with Zenit in May may decide the title."
In Sunday s other match Kuban Krasnodar upset hosts Rubin Kazan 2-0.
Kuban s Paraguayan defender Lorenzo Melgarejo put his side into an 11th minute lead, with Romanian forward Gheorghe Bucur doubling up two minutes after the break to secure Kuban s well-deserved win.
