KORAPUT: Maoists have reportedly abducted a sarpanch and two former panchayat members in Malkangiri district late on Friday. The abducted trio are sarpanch of Temrupally panchayat Samara Chati, former sarpanch Neelakantha Majhi and samiti member Dasarathi Majhi.
"We have reports of the trio being taken by the Maoists, but we are yet to ascertain the reason behind it.
The area is remote and we are facing difficulties in getting details," said SP (Malkangiri) Akhileswar Singh.
Sources said the trio had participated in the poll process and might have come under the Maoist scanner for this. "It could also be the reason. Details are awaited," the SP said.
Red rebels had given a call for poll boycott in Malkangiri district. On April 10, rebels went on the rampage torching a truck carrying EVMs for four booths under Mathili block and snatched and damaged EVMs at few other booths in the cut-off area.
