Banerjee also raised border enclaves and Teesta water-sharing during her Lok Sabha election campaign in Cooch Behar, which shares a border with Bangladesh.

Speaking on enclaves, Banerjee said, “I cannot impose my decision on people. I will accept the opinion of the people of Cooch Behar.”

Accusing the BJP for raking up the enclaves issue during polls to gain votes, Banerjee said: “BJP only speaks about Chhitmahal and other divisive issues when the election comes. These are election strategies.”

In 2011, Banerjee, then an ally of Congress-led UPA government, had backed out from PM Manmohan Singh’s visit to Bangladesh opposing the Teesta water-sharing treaty and the enclave exchange protocol signed between the two countries.

Banerjee’s opposition was on the amount of land that were to handed over to Bangladesh. The accord is, however, yet to be implemented.

Reiterating her stand on Teesta water-sharing, she said the waters of Teesta cannot be shared with Bangladesh
“Teesta has almost dried. People of north Bengal are suffering from acute drinking water crisis. In this scenario, Centre wants Teesta water-sharing treaty to be implemented. I have to think for the people of Bengal,” she said.
