Robbery case: Suspects now claim they stole Rs 86 lakh
PUNE: A day after the Hinjewadi police seized Rs 71 lakh from three persons while investigating a robbery case of Rs 50,000, investigations have revealed that the actual cash stolen from the two courier boys from Latur on their way to Mumbai was much more.
Police said the suspects on Friday revealed that they had also stolen two bags containing Rs 86 lakh. Police have claimed that the cash belonged to a Latur-based businessman and was being transferred to Mumbai illegally.
Police are now looking for Rs 15 lakh which is "missing".
The arrested are Suraj Raut, Harish Patil and Vijay Gutte, all from Udgir in Latur district. Sudesh Ashok Giri, owner of a Latur-based courier company, had lodged a complaint in this regard with the Hinjewadi police.
Police had seized Rs 71,32,500 from Raut's residence while investigating the robbery of a private bus near Dange Chowk on April 3.
In his complaint, Giri had said that on April 2, he had sent his two employees to Mumbai with Rs 50,000 cash and other parcels on a private bus. However, while crossing Dange Chowk, the suspects forcibly stopped the bus, snatched the bags containing cash and fled.
However, during investigations, Giri told the police that Rs 86 lakh was robbed. In his statement, he said the money belonging to a businessman in Latur was being sent to Mumbai. Police are also investigating whether any hawala angle is involved in the transfer of money.
