Schalke cement Champions League place

Schalke 04 tightened their grip on a direct Champions League qualification place on Friday with a 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the German Bundesliga.

Max Meyer put the home side in front at the Veltins Arena shortly before the hour mark after Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp could only parry Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's shot.

Huntelaar also missed a penalty, which was saved by Trapp, before Jefferson Farfan made it 2-0 with a superbly taken free-kick in added time to secure victory for Jens Keller's side, who draw level with second-placed Borussia Dortmund on 58 points.

The win moved Schalke ten 10 points clear of fourth-placed sides Borussia Moenchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen after 30 of 34 matches, although both sides have a game in hand.

Dortmund travel to newly crowned Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on Saturday while Leverkusen entertain Hertha Berlin on Sunday.
