There has been talk about a new Leica S camera has been for some time. But now we have a confirmation coming from a Leica representative, that the camera will be announced at the Photokina show this September.

After talking to the Leica official, Digipixelpop reports that the new Leica S camera will pack a 40-50 megapixel CMOS sensor, which was already expected. However, Leica is also adding the 4K video features, that might be considered an interesting addition to Leica’s current line-up.

The arrival of the new Leica S shouldn’t come as a big surprise, since the competition, in the form of Haselblad and PhaseOne, has already announced medium format cameras with CMOS sensors. On top of that, 4K video seems to be the next big thing and more and more companies are adding this functionality one way or another.

There’s not a lot of information regarding other specs, but considering that the Leica S will pack 4K video, we can easily assume that we’re going to see a lot of fun features arrive with the camera. And judging by the fact that the camera comes from Leica, you better start saving up, as the offering won’t come cheap.

In related news, the upcoming Pentax 645z medium format camera is also said to arrive with 4K video.
