EL PASO, Texas - More than 30 senior leaders comprised of the delegation of Colombia’s Joint Sergeant Major Academy paid a visit to the world's premiere institution for the education of noncommissioned officers, the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas, Feb. 4-5. The group was led by Colombian’s sergeant major of army, Sergeant Major of the Army Henry Dulce, a class 62 graduate from USASMA.
“In Colombia, we are improving the noncommissioned officer development and education of the NCO Corps,” said Dulce. “This is the first time when sergeants major have come to the United States, especially in one group to visit USASMA.”
“The idea is to receive all the information from the U.S. sergeant major academy in order to improve our sergeant major academy in Colombia,” added Dulce.
“Welcoming the sergeants major of Colombia here at the academy along with his entire sergeant major course class which is international and joint sends a great message throughout the southern command area of responsibility,” said Command Sgt. Maj. William Zaiser, the command sergeant major of U.S. Southern Command. “It sends a great message to the rest of the region that the Colombian military has enough confidence and commitment to improving and developing their NCO Corps.”
The visit supported by U.S. Southern Command and hosted by U.S. Army South, along with USASMA for this particular portion, provided an opportunity to share training concepts with members of the Colombian army and their international partners for them to take back to their countries.
“This is a great exchange of ideas,” said Zaiser. “Not only have the Colombians received a lot of great information from the top notch instructors here at USASMA, but the instructors have learned a lot from our great partners from Colombia.”
After an initial reception from the USASMA commandant, Command Sgt. Maj. Rory Malloy, the joint delegation received overviews of each major department at the academy.
“Now we are clear on the academic records and the curriculum for the sergeants major academy, and it is very important for us to transmit this knowledge to the Colombian sergeants major academy,” said Dulce. “We have to develop the professionalism of the NCO Corps in Colombia.”
As the delegation continued on its scheduled 10-day visit to include stops at the 3rd Cavalry Regiment Headquarters on Fort Hood, Texas, and U.S. Army South Headquarters on Fort Sam Houston, Texas, lasting impressions will remain with them from their observations at USASMA.
“One of my most important campaigns we are conducting in Colombia is ‘To be proud to be an NCO.’ It is my motto,” said Dulce. “All NCOs need to be proud to be an NCO and represent the NCO Corps in the best way.”
“It is my hope as the SOUTHCOM command sergeant major that what’s been going on here with Colombia and their visit to us will spread throughout the region,” said Zaiser. “That similar NCO development systems and education systems will start to sprout in the other countries in our AOR. A strong NCO Corps means a strong military and Colombia is the best example of an NCO Corp in the region.”
