World-famous helmet manufacturer Arai announces the introduction of a new sun shield system for its helmets, called the PRO Shade System.
The patented solution is only half a novelty, as external sun visors have been around for quite a long time now, but Arai says the new system is better than the previous versions other manufacturers had. Honestly, I do hope they are right, as the external sun visor the older Nolan N82 helmed had was a real, full-fledged noise-machine at various speeds on some bikes I rode.
So, the Arai PRO Shade System replaces the internal sun visor with an external piece. This approach is coherent with Arai’s proverbial commitment to rider safety, too. Internal sun visor systems may affect a helmet’s shock absorption and energy dissipation during an impact, and Arai seems not that willing to take any unnecessary risks.
There are two very cool things about the PRO Shade System: lowering the shield with a head movement and the fact that it can install on any SAI-type visor. Arai uses SAI-compliant rotating hinges for their visors, but the PRO Shade System is different. However, the system can be easily installed on a SAI-shield, offering enhanced versatility form one helmet to another.
Finally, the PRO Shade System can be lowered in place with a sudden flick of the head, sources report. Or the rider can simply use his or her hand to lower or raise it as needed. Fact is that the PRO Shade System comes with a special lock which prevents it from dropping unexpectedly.
Arai also says that the external shield is not affecting the energy management in case of an impact and is designed to break easily, minimizing other injury risks. At the same time, no scratching on the helmet visor is possible as the two will not touch under normal operation. The system will become available this spring for about $100 (€72), and fits all Arai “SAI” full-face helmets.
