Baroda ride on Lukman Meriwala five-for, Munaf Patel 2/10 to beat Delhi

A depleted Delhi side could only make 115 for 9 in reply to Baroda's 131 for 6.

Baroda posted a 16-run win, their second on the trot in the tournament, over a depleted Delhi side with left-arm medium pacer Lukman Meriwala grabbing a five-wicket haul in a Group B Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 match at BKC on Wednesday.

Electing to bat, Baroda made 131 for 6. Opener and skipper Aditya Waghmode made 30 off 29 balls, punctuated with two fours and as many sixes, while Krunal Pandya made a quickfire 22 off only eight balls, with the help of two fours and a six.

Sumit Narwal, Pratyush Singh, Kshitiz Sharma and Varun Sood picked up a wicket apiece for Delhi. Chasing a modest target of 132, Delhi could only make 115 for 9 to slump to their second defeat in as many games, having lost to Kerala at the Wankhede Stadium yesterday.

Meriwala picked up three wickets in his first two overs to send Delhi reeling at 8 for 3 before Jagrit Anand and Yogesh Nagar stitched a 70-run partnership. Anand was the top scorer with a 44-ball 54 (4×4,2×6), while Nagar contributed 31 runs off 35 balls. Meriwala then castled Anand in his last over and got rid of Javed Khan two balls later.

Meriwala finished with figures of 4-0-23-5, his first five-for in T20 format. Munaf Patel bagged two wickets giving away just 10 runs from his four overs, while Krunal Pandya scalped two wickets for 17.

Rajasthan win

In another Group B match, Rajasthan staged a good come back through some incisive bowling to overcome Bengal by 14 runs. Put in to bat, Rajasthan posted 137 for 9, riding on skipper Rajesh Bishnoi’s breezy 18-ball 36 and opener Ankit Lamba’s 34-ball 37.

In reply, Bengal started well to be 49 for 1 in the 7th over and were scoring at a brisk pace before losing the plot and finishing at 123 for 7 for their second defeat in as many days. They had lost to Baroda on Tuesday.

Batting first, Rajasthan lost opener Surya Prakash Suwalka (0) who was bowled in the third over but one-down batsman Divya Pratap Singh (30) and Lamba forged a 59-run stand to provide the team a good foundation. But they lost 4 wickets in 5 balls and were reeling at 69 for 5 after Bengal skipper Saurashish Lahiri bagged three wickets in 4 balls by dismissing Lamba, Puneet Yadav and Naresh Gehlot. But he went for 20 runs in his next over.

Sourav Mondal, Sandipan Das and Sanjib Sanyal picked up two wickets each.

Barring opener Vivek Singh’s 40-ball 48, none of the Bengal batsmen made any noteworthy contribution when Bengal chased and the team kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Rajasthan left-arm spinner Gajendra Singh Parihar picked up 3 for for 14, while Rituraj Singh bagged two wickets for 11 runs.

UP, up and away

Opener Mukul Dagar cracked a 45-ball 63 while medium pacer Akshdeep Nath took three wickets for 20 runs as Uttar Pradesh thrashed Jharkhand by eight wickets in Rajkot on Wednesday. Jharkhand scored 114. However, Uttar Pradesh chased down the target in 14.4 overs, losing only two wickets.

After being invited to bat first, Jharkhand’s openers Ishank Jaggi and Ishan Khan gave a decent start, adding 48 runs before latter was run out. Nath struck twice dismissing Jharkhand top scorer Ishank Jaggi and Virat Singh (2). Jaggi made 39 runs from 37 balls with six fours while Sandeep Gupta contributed 28. Besides Akshdeep’s three, Praveen Kumar and Praveen Gupta had a wicket each.

Chasing, Uttar Pradesh did not face any trouble even though they lost opener Prashant Gupta (11) early. Dagar and Eklavya Dwivedi then joined hands, adding 60 runs for the second wicket.

Brief scores: Jharkhand 114 for 6 in 20 overs (Ishank Jaggi 39, Sandeep Gupta 28, Akshdeep 3/20) lost to Uttar Pradesh 120 for 2 in 14.4 overs (Mukul Dagar 63,Eklaya Dwivedi not out 37, Samar Quadri 1/16) by eight wickets.

Haryana crush Gujarat

In another Group A match, Haryana defeated Gujarat by six wickets. Electing to bat first, Gujarat made a competitive 146, losing 7 wickets but failed to defend the total as Haryana chased down the target while losing four wickets off 19.3 overs. Gujarat had a shaky start as they lost Rajdeep Darbar (3) and Smit Patel (1), but Priyank Panchal (36) and Himalaya Barad (48) helped their side to post a competitive total of 146.

For Haryana, Joginder Sharma and Ashish Hooda grabbed two wickets each.

Chasing the target of 147, Avi Barot (56) and Rahul Deewan (36) gave Haryana a perfect headstart, adding 94 runs for the opening wicket off just 11.2 overs before Barot got out.
