Avendias to Host 2014 Lifetime of Achievement Garden Party
Palo Alto, CA (PRWEB) April 09, 2014 -- For the 26th consecutive year, Avenidas and its community partners, the Palo Alto Weekly and Palo Alto Online, will celebrate Lifetimes of Achievement honorees from 3-5 p.m. on May 18. The 2014 Avenidas Lifetimes of Achievement honorees are Jean Dawes, Greg Gallo, Isaac and Maddy Stein, Jay Thorwaldson and Carolyn Tucher.
“We are proud to be able to honor such an esteemed group of high achievers and show the community what age and wisdom can accomplish,” stated Avenidas CEO/President Lisa Hendrickson. “Our thanks also go to our steering committee, this year co-chaired by Cathy Kroymann and Maureen Roskoph, who help us put on a fabulous party that everyone enjoys!”
The May 18 Garden Party is open to the public and tickets can be purchased for $75 by contacting Avenidas at (650) 289-5445, or online at http://www.avenidas.org. Proceeds from the party help fund the programs offered at the non-profit agency Avenidas, which depend on community support.
The 2014 honorees include:
Jean Dawes
Jean Dawes is known for her advocacy of education and fair housing in Palo Alto. For more than 20 years, she devoted much of her time and talent to the Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD), serving on numerous committees and PTA boards while working as a teacher’s aide at two elementary schools and, later, as a college counselor at Palo Alto High School. Her last job was as an educational consultant for College Admissions Advisors Associates. She has also been on the board for Pursuit of Excellence for 18 years.
Greg Gallo
Corporate attorney Greg Gallo joined the Palo Alto law firm of Ware & Freidenrich in 1973 and is currently a partner at DLA Piper. During his 40+ years in law, he has dedicated much of his efforts to building nonprofit capacity throughout Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. In addition to serving on the boards of several for-profit organizations such as Maxtor Corporation and Network General, he has spent time on numerous nonprofit boards, including those of the American Red Cross, Family & Children Services, the Entrepreneurs Foundation and Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
Isaac & Madeleine Stein
Both Isaac & Madeleine (“Maddy”) Stein are champions for community causes, nonprofit fundraising and Stanford University. Their involvement with Stanford is longstanding and multifaceted: Maddy worked at (and earned a Master’s Degree from) the School of Education while Isaac was a graduate student working on his MBA/JD.
Jay Thorwaldson
Jay Thorwaldson retired as editor of the Palo Alto Weekly in January 2011, capping a career in journalism and writing that spanned 50 years and had widespread local influence. Before joining the Weekly, he worked with the Palo Alto Times/Peninsula Times Tribune, taught at Stanford and was director of public affairs at Palo Alto Medical Foundation.
Carolyn Tucher
Carolyn Tucher’s extraordinary contributions to the community have focused on education, art education and “building bridges across 101.” With regards to the latter, she was a founding board member of Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto and co-founded Cultural Kaleidoscope, an art center program that teams up children and teachers from East Palo Alto and Belle Haven classrooms with Palo Alto classrooms and local artists.
