His stomach measures 60 cms
A liver cirrhosis condition that developed three years ago has turned Pappala into a couch potato

It all started with a swelling in Santosh Kumar Pappala’s legs. And then his stomach became bloated. He was not worried, till it swelled up to 60 cms. Now he is having a tough time, struggling to make his way from one hospital to another. But the biggest challenge that he has is arranging the Rs 30 lakh which is required for his treatment. As he sits at home, having taken leave from work, he often questions himself. “Why me?”

About three years ago, when he developed a swelling in his legs, Pappala thought that it was a minor complication. Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, Pappala, 38, says, “I went to a corporate hospital and they performed a procedure where they drained out all the water from my body. The doctors were aware of the problem and after they took out the fluid, I used to be okay for three to four months. But as months passed by, the time intervals that are required to perform the procedure went on reducing. Since August last year, my stomach started bloating without control. There was a time when the doctors had to take out twenty litres out of my body against the usual three to four litres.”

Pappala is an investment relations officer and stays at Yeshwanthpur with his wife and two children. He is a native of Andhra Pradesh. Since he cannot walk, he has taken leave from his work.

Dr Sonal Asthana, Head, Hepatobiliary Surgery and Multiorgan Transplantation Services at BGS Global Hospital who is treating him, said that he suffers from end-stage cirrhosis of liver. ''The water that gets accumulated needs to be taken out at regular intervals. Since it is a long-term damage to the liver, the only option is a liver transplant.''

His wife has been identified as a suitable donor. But he faces another challenge: The cost of the surgery is about Rs 30 lakh which is due at the BGS Global Hospital in Kengeri.

Since he is the sole breadwinner of the family, he cannot wait to get back to work as soon as possible.
