Maken offers prayers at gurdwara, AAP’s Khetan stages a roadshow

Sitting MP from New Delhi constituency, Ajay Maken, spent over an hour in Paharganj, campaigning amidst the beating of drums, firecrackers and slogans.

The last leg of campaigning in New Delhi constituency, which houses the residences of Delhi’s political elite as well as slum clusters and villages, reached fever pitch on Tuesday. Candidates from the Congress, the BJP as well as the AAP chalked out their own campaign trails, meeting supporters at various points and putting up roadshows.

Sitting MP from New Delhi constituency, Ajay Maken, spent over an hour in Paharganj, campaigning amidst the beating of drums, firecrackers and slogans.

Showered with rose petals, he stopped every few steps to greet shopkeepers and residents of the area who garlanded him and offered him refreshments.

Congress youth leader Ragini Nayak and discus thrower Krishna Poonia were seen accompanying the MP, whose campaigning primarily focused on his achievements as Sports Minister. Poonia, who had won a gold medal in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, had joined the Congress last year.

During campaigning, Maken briefly stopped at a gurdwara in Chuna Mandi, Paharganj. The ardas (Sikh prayer) was also performed while he stood at the gurdwara’s doorstep.

While he was wrapping up campaigning, just close to 5 pm, Aam Aadmi Party’s Ashish Khetan was also seen in the same area. Khetan had earlier visited areas such as Vasant Gaon, Amar Colony and Gulmohar Park Khetan decided to meet his supporters through a roadshow. Accompanied by his team in an open jeep, he started the yatra from a JJ cluster near Hanuman Temple in Moti Nagar. He then moved to Karampura. “Young and old walked along. And since BJP workers were also campaigning, the excitement was greater. The atmosphere was charged up,” Bhawana, a volunteer and a teacher in a private school in Punjabi Bagh, said.

The group then moved towards Milind cinema in Karampura, from where it went to Patel Nagar, and Rajendra Nagar. The show came to an end at Karol Bagh.

BJP’s Meenakshi Lekhi, on the other hand, went to Kalkaji at 9 am. She moved to Adhchini in Malviya Nagar and IIT, Delhi, meeting supporters everywhere. Lekhi also visited Safdarjung Enclave and Pilanji village and ended the show at a JJ camp in RK Puram.
