An Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) leader allegedly thrashed a Delhi University professor for deriding Narendra Modi, the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, said a newspaper report on Tuesday.

According to The Hindu, the zoology professor had purportedly said that "chaiwalas are not equipped to take university decisions".

Raju Rawat, Joint Secretary of the Delhi University Students' Union, said he has gone to meet Umesh Rai to complain over some students not getting laptops under the new four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP).

But Rai apparently asked him to leave. Rawat then told the professor said the FYUP would be withdrawn after Modi comes to power.

To this, the professor purportedly made the remark.

"At this, I lost my temper and hit him," Rawat was quoted as saying in The Hindu .

Rai has filed a police complaint.
