MBABANE – A Swazi and his girlfriend have been arrested in Rustenburg, South Africa for being found in possession of dagga worth over E200 000.

According to the South African Police Service website, the 22-year-old man was arrested after a car chase with the police, where they confiscated dagga worth E200 000 from his motor vehicle.

The police flying squad was allegedly patrolling on R556 road between Lekgalong and Barseba villages when they spotted three vehicles, all with Swaziland registration plates travelling in the opposite direction at high speed. The police made a U-turn and followed the vehicles.

“The police managed to stop only one vehicle, searched it and found four big heavy bags with dagga, estimated at E200 000,” Colonel Emelda Setlhako said.
After further questioning, the Swazi is said to have led the police to his house at Seraleng near Meriting where an 18-year-old girl, who is allegedly the suspect’s girlfriend, was found with dagga parcelled in a plastic estimated to be worth E5 000.

“They were both arrested and detained at Boitekong Police Station for illegal possession of dagga,” said Setlhako.
The couple was expected to appear yesterday at the Rustenburg Magistrates Court.

This is not the first case in recent times as last week, it was reported that five Swazi men were arrested with dagga worth E25 000 in Lukwatini. Also, two Swazi women were arrested with a Nigerian national in February for being found in possession of dagga worth E15 000 in Phokeng.
