Biker killed by truck at Juinagar

A 27-year-old man from Pen, who was dropping his cousin to a Kharghar college, died when a truck hit his bike and ran over him on the Sion-Panvel Highway at Juinagar on Monday morning. His 20-year old cousin, who was riding pillion, survived with minor injuries, while the truck driver fled from the spot.

Darpan Dattatray Pilane, who worked for a private firm in Pen called Memco, had spent the weekend at his aunt’s house in Navapada, Thane. While leaving for work around 7.30 am on Monday, he offered to drop to his cousin Ashwini, a second year student of mechanical engineering, to Saraswati College of Engineering in Kharghar.

“When we reached Juinagar around 8.15 am, the truck hit our bike from the rear. I fell off towards the edge of the road, but Darpan who also fell was run over by the truck,” said Ashwini, who is admitted to MGM Hospital in Vashi. “Darpan was wearing a helmet which was crushed. I fainted for a while, and when I gained consciousness I saw a crowd had gathered at the spot.”

Darpan was taken to NMMC Hospital in Vashi, but was declared dead on arrival.

“The Yamaha bike which the victim was riding had kept to the left, but the truck driver suddenly swerved sharply and knocked the bike down. The truck driver fled and there were no CCTV cameras at the spot,” said Senior Police Inspector Sangeeta Alphonso of the Nerul Police Station.

“Ashwini suffered injury to her left hand, but is stable,” added Alphonso. “We are awaiting the post-mortem report and are hunting for the driver.” MMB
