Light years ahead

He is 76 years old, lost his wife last year and weathered crippling family politics to retain his position as one of the wealthiest industrialists around. The fiercely private Rahul Bajaj did cut an impressive figure on the lawns of the Pune racing club when Prince Charles came visiting last year. But since then he has reportedly been on a special diet to shed some excess flab. The result, we are told, is an enviable eight kilos less, and a spring in his step to go along with it. Now that’s some inspiration.

Twain don’t meet

This certainly does not seem to be a good year for love. While we are still wondering what prompted Lisa Haydon to call off her meticulously planned beach wedding with Karan Bhojwani, there’s news of disquiet in the paradise of Candice Pinto and Asif Azim. The modelcouple who have been dating for more than five years now, have had their share of hot and cold phases. Asif is reportedly averse to committing himself to the relationship, even though he nursed a crush on Candice for years before dating her. Apparently Candice’s family has been in denial of the affair – they are uncomfortable with the idea of the inter-faith match. But Candice, whose bestie Anchal Kumar is now happily married to her long-time boyfriend Anupam Mittal, wants to settle down. Asif, on his part, is more focussed on consolidating his assets. He has built a mansion for his mother back home in Bangladesh and is intent on creating his own production company. Love and marriage, feels Asif, can wait. For Candice, the wait is killing. She had broken off her previous engagement once Asif walked into her life and believed this time it was for keeps. We hope so too.

Abhishek Kapoor is known to be quite the connoisseur of the finer things in life. And we believe his upcoming office space in suburban Khar is sumptuous reflection of this facet of his personality. The two-room apartment is being done up stylishly, with Gattu paying great attention to the details - he has picked up ideas and accessories from Rome, Paris and Bangalore. We hear he has also roped in Ashiesh Shah to help him choose the right kind of light and set the mood for his special corner where he would do most of his writing and reading and the occasional brainstorming.

Tailpiece

We are trying to wrap our heads around the curious case of Congress’s Gurgaon candidate Rao Dharampal, whose FB page had created quite a row with nearly a lakh ‘likes’ since it was launched on March 21. Dharampal has claimed his family and friends have been instrumental in boosting his virtual image. While most of these ‘likes’ were initially from Egypt, his massive family seems to have relocated to Istanbul overnight and have been following every single update with touching sincerity.
PS: Jazz guitar virtuoso John McLaughlin’s concert in the city on Saturday was notable for the absence of young musicians and music lovers in the audience. Not because there aren’t enough young people who appreciate his music, but because it was sponsored by a liquor company -- which served its wares at the gig venue for free -- no one below age 25 was allowed in. So ace drummer Ranjit Barot’s daughter missed watching her father perform with the legend, as did Barot’s 17-year-old bass protege, Mohini Dey. While the nearly three-hour show was live-streamed on the Internet, the incident remi
