New Yorkshire Deal For Root

Joe Root extends his stay with Yorkshire after signing a new contract keeping him at Headingley until 2016.

Sheffield-born Root made his county debut four years ago and has since played 34 First Class matches where he averages over 43.

He played in his first Test for England in 2012 during the tour to India and his maiden Test century came at his home ground of Headingley against New Zealand last year.

"We are delighted that Joe has committed his long-term future to the club," said Yorkshire's director of cricket, Martyn Moxon.

"He is one of the brightest talents in the game and will be part of Yorkshire and England's plans for many years to come.

"His desire to be the best that he can is a perfect example to our young players that if you work hard on your skills and have total commitment, you can achieve almost anything in your profession.

"He is only 18 months into his England career and is already an established member of the national side.

"I'm looking forward to seeing Joe continue his progression as a Yorkshire and England cricketer."

The 23-year-old missed England's dismal ICC World Twenty20 campaign in Bangladesh due to a fractured thumb sustained during England's final One- Day International against the West Indies in Antigua.

Despite sustaining the injury in only the third ball of the innings, Root continued to play on, scoring 107 to claim his maiden ODI century.

Root is expected to return to action at the end of April when Yorkshire take on Middlesex at Lord's in the LV= County Championship.
