Hot conditions to fade

Tauranga's run of unseasonal warm and sunny autumn weather is expected to fade mid-week as the showers from the weather system responsible begin making their way over the ranges.

The city registered hot temperatures for April at the weekend, reaching 27 degrees on Sunday at Tauranga Airport and 28.2 in Whakatane.

The conditions continue today with Tauranga expecting 26 degrees, says Metservice meteorologist Dan Corbett.

The warm air from the sub-tropical low off the east coast has all the moisture extracted as it passes the Gisborne ranges bringing dryer air to the Bay.

And while the Bay experiences warm conditions it was a rainy weekend for Gisborne, which recorded 100mm of rain in the last 24 hours.

'With the way this low might rotate in, it might bring a little bit more cloud into the picture over the next couple of days, but none of the real moisture will creep across the ranges so you are going to stay fine, dry, and not really like April. It's more like summer because of that warmer flow coming down the mountains.”

The cloud will get heavier as the week goes on and by Wednesday showers will start to come with the increasing cloud, says Dan.

The chances of rain will increase Thursday and Friday says Dan – but not as bad as Gisborne.

'Days like today you have to take advantage of them because you know what mother nature's like,” says Dan.

'As we go further through the month she gets a bit more grunty and barky and bitey as we go through late April towards winter. And of course we will get the stronger weather systems at some point so these fine days just grab them.”
