A day after the last nominations were filed, around 800 people from across Bandra, Khar, Santa Cruz, Kurla and Powai on Sunday attended a session with the candidates contesting this year's Lok Sabha election for the North-Central constituency.

Organised by NGO Action for Good Governance and Networking in India (AGNI) and H-west Federation, the event, Meet Your Candidates, started at11am at Bandra's Apostolic Carmel school. Candidates who attended the event were sitting MP Priya Dutt of Congress, Poonam Mahajan of BJP, Farhan Azmi of Samajwadi Party, Pheroze Palkhivala of AAP and Sanju Verma, an independent candidate.

Taking a dig at Dutt in her introductory speech, Azmi said the diverse and complex North-Central constituency has been hugely neglected by the ruling party despite being elected for two consecutive terms. "I want to ensure equal development and opportunity for everyone in the constituency," he said, talking about his vision.

Dutt defended her party saying making a slum-free Mumbai is not easy, but more people have been pulled out of poverty during the UPA regime. "Malnutrition has reduced under the UPA government, whose mission is to focus on inclusive growth and bridging the gap between politicians and people," she said.

Palkhivala stuck to his party's corruption theme. "Whether it is roads, sewerage or infrastructure, the root of all problems is corruption," he said, adding, "I will encourage enterprises, but will not tolerate crony capitalism."

Verma, a first-timer, said charity, change and empowerment are the three things she will be looking at if elected to power.

Mahajan, on the other hand, spoke about the Hawkers' Reservation Bill and her plans to take up the issue of women's safety on priority. "Like Gujarat, I will ensure there are more police stations with policewomen on every road," she said.
