Urban areas forgotten as campaigners focus on villages

In comparison, the Aam Aadmi Party, whose candidate is Surinder Pal Singh, has shown more inclination towards attracting voters in urban areas.

With just a few days left for the polling day, political parties seem to have neglected urban areas of Panchkula district in their campaign, with more attention being paid to rural parts.

BJP candidate Rattan Lal Kataria, contesting from Ambala, has campaigned extensively in Barwala, Raipur Rani, Kotvilla and Pinjore, as compared to a single road show conducted in the urban part of Panchkula city a few days ago. Similarly, Congress with its candidate Raj Kumar Valmiki, has been campaigning in Barwala, Raipur Rani, Pinjore, Kalka, Rajiv colony, Indira colony and Sector 20. He has hardly touched the urban part of the district.

In comparison, the Aam Aadmi Party, whose candidate is Surinder Pal Singh, has shown more inclination towards attracting voters in urban areas. Though AAP has campaigned in rural areas of Barwala, Raipur Rani, Morni, Amravati Enclave, Chandimandir, Surajpur, Labour colony and Madawala, it still has also covered areas such as Sectors 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

When asked the reason for this trend, BJP district president Vishal Seth said, “We felt that in the past few days more effort was being given to rural areas and that there was a need to woo voters in urban areas as well. From tomorrow onwards, we would be starting a two-day campaign focussed on attracting voters in urban areas.”

Senior BJP leader Gyan Chand Gupta claimed the trend was an illusion. “Campaigning in urban areas is performed in differently. Door -to-door campaigning is preferred there. Information technology and social media are used to attract urban population.”
