An Abbotsford woman has come up with a unique solution to Metro Vancouver’s pricey housing market by building her own for $15,000.

Kayla Feenstra, 30, has built her own 130 sq. ft. home, dubbed a “Jack in a box,” on an Abbotsford farm. The home sits on a trailer bed so it can be moved.

“I think it’s for university students, international labour workers and people that are professional singles and don’t want to live in a high-rise with 15-million other people,” she said.

Feenstra, who works as a landscaper, came up with the idea while house-hunting in Abbotsford last year. After missing out on a potential home purchase, she decided to try her hand at designing her own home.

“I’ve grown up with my hands on the drawing board and always had a pencil in my hand designing something,” she said.

The floor plan was changed 25 times before Feenstra settled on a design she liked. The home features solar panels as well as rain water harvesting to help with sustainability.

With 11-foot ceilings and large windows, Feenstra says she doesn’t feel constrained in the home.

“It’s pretty awesome. People walk in and go ‘whoa, it’s huge’,” she said.Kayla Feenstra built her home for $15,000. She came up with the idea while house-hunting in Abbotsford
