VADODARA: It was a day of high drama in Vadodara on Thursday. Congress's Vadodara Lok Sabha candidate Madhusudan Mistry and 33 other party workers were arrested following a major ruckus over putting up of posters on electricity poles.
Mistry along with the workers was arrested for damaging public property and rioting. It started in the afternoon when Mistry and his supporters sat on a dharna in Dandia Bazar area alleging that Vadodara Municipal Corporation's (VMC) was biased in giving away prime advertising locations to the BJP for putting up the posters of its prime minister candidate, Narendra Modi.
Mistry along with other Congress leaders attempted to put Congress posters on the electricity poles nearby. Sitting on Rawat's shoulders, Mistry even tried to reach a pole and paste a Congress poster. Police tried to pacify and disperse them but to no avail. Some Congress workers even tore the BJP posters and also pasted their party's posters.
They were first detained and later arrested for damaging kiosks installed by the BJP some days ago. All were granted bail by the court.
"The administration is working on directions from Modi," Mistry said after being released on bail.
Congress alleged the contractor hired by VMC gave away all the prime spots to the BJP. District election officer (DEO) Vinod Rao denied any bias and said both BJP and Congress were offered same number of spots. Congress was offered 1,000 but the party demanded exactly the same spots allotted to BJP.
