Pacific Games gold medalists Waisale Suka and Waisake Raratabu will participate at the Fiji Beach Volleyball Commission’s ‘Laucala Challenger’ in Suva tomorrow.
FBVC director Viliame Katia confirmed the two players would be vying for the top prize-money and a spot in the national team.
“Winners get $300 for both men’s and women’s categories while losing finalists get $150 and losing semifinalists get $50,” he said.
“With the two of the most experienced players in the tourney it should add to the excitement of the occasion and it should bring it the best from other players.”
Katia said the Commission would use the tournament to recruit raw talent from the grassroots for international tournaments this year.
The commission will be assembling men’s and women’s teams to take part in a number of Asian Volleyball Confederation sanctioned international tournaments this year.
“We are affiliated to the Asian Volleyball Confederation so we are looking at sending teams to these tournaments,” Katia said.
“We will be looking for the best combinations and consistent performers on the court so we get the best. As the beach volleyball competition involves club level participation we will be opening the door to anyone who is willing to go that mile and can afford a mere $30 registration for the tournament.”
Registration is $30 per team and closes today.  Teams can pay their fees to Betty Blakelock on 9754370, Varanisese Logavatu on 9225551 or Anare Tuitoga on 9717745. Entry fee is $2.50.
