Peter Ebdon, China Open champion in 2009 and 2012, moved into the last 16 of the world ranking event with a 5-4 defeat of Judd Trump, yesterday.

Former world champion Ebdon has reached just one ranking event quarter-final so far this season – at the International Championship – but showed signs of a return to form with an impressive win against Trump.

From 4-3 down, Ebdon won the eighth frame with breaks of 48 and 30, then took the decider with a superb 86.

“We both missed a few balls so perhaps the standard could have been a bit higher but I was very pleased with this result,” Ebdon, 43, told World Snooker.

“I tried really hard and it’s a very good win for me. However, it’s days like today that make me realise that it still worth me putting all the effort in. I proved I’m still capable of beating the best players in the world.”

Jimmy White continued his excellent run in the event with a 5-3 defeat of close friend Alfie Burden. The Whirlwind’s top breaks were 91, 60 and 110.

“I’m playing good stuff, I needed to win my last match to stay on the tour so I’m very pleased with my performance,” said White.

“I outplayed him in safety. My experience won me the match.

“I love China and I really appreciate my support. It’s very nice to guarantee my place back on the tour in Beijing.”

John Higgins top scored with 86 in a 5-1 win over Michael White while Shaun Murphy white-washed Dechawat Poomjaeng 5-0 with a top run of 90.
