BGMEA Chittagong finalizes Kalurghat for Garment Village

The Chittagong branch of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has arrived at a consensus on setting up a Garment Village on a proposed site in Kalurghat, located several miles north of the port city of Chittagong, reports Daily Sun.

At a meeting of the Standing Committee for Garment Industrial Zone Affairs, office bearers of BGMEA Chittagong reached consensus over setting up the Garment Village on the proposed site of more than 12 acres of land, owned by the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC).

The meeting of the Standing Committee followed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's instruction to the concerned ministires at the March 24 Cabinet Meeting to take necessary steps for setting up Garment Village in Chittagong.

A few days earlier on March 20, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, while inaugurating the 12th Chittagong Apparel Fabrics and Accessories Exposition, gave assurance of taking immediate measures to set up Garment Village in Chittagong.

In his speech, the Minister said that there is no alternative to setting up garment village for making Bangladesh’s garment sector more competitive in the current scenario.

The meeting of the BGMEA Standing Committee also decided to conduct a survey for finding out prospective sites in the Chittagong region for implementing a project on long-term basis.

The participants at the meeting urged the Government to set up two more apparel industrial zones in Chittagong.
