A former policeman, a social worker and a farmer — Jayantilal Jethalal Mevada — wears many a hat. Involved in a door-to-door campaign ever since his name was announced as the AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) candidate for Ahmedabad West, Mevada claimed that the response to AAP has been good.

“People are fed up of BJP and Congress. We are taking up the issue of lack of availability of basic amenities for the poor. I have been to Dariapur, Danilimda and Asarva. While the middle class still has access to facilities, the poor live in pathetic condition with no water or drainage,” said Mevada.

He later also set up the Nav Chetna Education Trust to help students with their education. “In places like Dahod, school facilities are very poor. Children often drop out due to lack of money to buy books. The trust has people, including a few former policemen, who donate money to help such kids,” said Mevada, who said the trust was being run on an informal basis and not registered.

The 60-year-old former policeman, who joined the force as a police sub-inspector, however, had his share of controversies, too, while in service. The 1978-batch officer retired as adjutant in SRP group 10 in 2012. He also served as deputy superintendent of police of the state crime record bureau in 2007.
