SAI stands by boxers after IABF gets the boot

It’s an irony. While the now-defunct boxing officials are taking swing at the world body and sports ministry, it is the boxers who finally take all the blows.

Yesterday, it was one such day. The inability and lack of commitment by former Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) officials forced the Sports Ministry to derecognise them.

“The matter has been considered in totality and keeping in view all relevant facts including the fact that the International Federation of the boxing sport has withdrawn its recognition to IABF, it has been decided to withdraw the recognition granted by Government of India to IABF with immediate effect,” a source in the Ministry said.

Provisional suspension since 2012

Since 2012, IABF was put under provisional suspension by the Ministry.

Although, technically it would have meant that Sports Authority of India (SAI), who are paying for training camps being held across the country to come to a halt. The boxers would have been ordered to evict the SAI venues where the camps are being held. This would have also put the upcoming international tournaments in jeopardy as SAI would have stopped paying for their foreign tours.

Fortunately, none of this would happen. Even though the Sports Ministry suspension continues, SAI would the offer support to the boxers many of whom are also preparing for the Commonwealth Games.

According to Director General Jiji Thomson SAI would continue to back the boxers and coaches. “No, the boxers will not be affected. The camps will continue to be held at the respective venues. SAI ill continue to fund the boxers in the upcoming tournaments. The camps for Commonwealth Games will not be affected,” Thomson told Mirror.

NO ELECTION DUTY

While all government officials will be put on duty for the forthcoming General Elections, SAI has managed to get exemptions for sports coaches. “With some big tournaments coming up this year, we have asked the government to exempt the coaches from election duty. This way, coaching will not be affected in view of the elections,” Thomson said.
