Former DGP joins AIADMK

A 1975-batch IPS officer, Natraj courted controversy in 2006 when he openly praised Jaya as a perfect example of an “ideal woman” who manages her personal and professional career well. “I think she is an icon and every woman should look up to her,” he told a daily during an interview in connection with international women’s day.

It was DMK leader A Raja who complained to the Election Commission against Natraj’s comment, coming at a time when the model code of conduct was in force. The poll panel ordered his transfer, which was challenged in court. But by then, Natraj had antagonised the DMK, which led an alliance to win the election and formed the government.

Though one of the seniormost officials with a reasonably good track record, Natraj was given posts like the head of prisons, fire and rescue department, given charge of human rights issues, police housing and other such departments that are considered insignificant. He was also bypassed for the post of DGP (law and order), which went to Letika Saran, his junior officer.

This led to a series of petitions before the CAT and the courts, before Natraj retired in March 2011.

When Jaya returned to power in 2011, Natraj was given the job of cleaning up the State PSC. He served as the chairman of TNPSC for a little over two years, and was replaced by former advocate general and Jaya’s counsel, A Navaneethakrishnan.
