Two workers killed by SUV while painting zebra crossing at Bandra

Two workers involved in painting a pedestrian crossing were killed and another was seriously injured, when a speeding Tavera ran over them on the Western Express Highway at Kherwadi Junction, Bandra (East) early on Monday.

According to the Kherwadi police, the accused, Brijesh Yadav, 28, who works as a driver for a travel firm, was proceeding towards Borivali when he suddenly noticed a group of workers painting the zebra crossing.

Yadav, who was speeding, couldn’t slow down or avoid the workers, and ended up driving the vehicle straight into them. The three victims were employed by road contractors to paint the crossing, and were carrying out the work around 3.30 am. They are residents of Uttar Pradesh and have no relatives in the city.

The police further said that the three men were rushed to the nearby Bhabha Hospital where two of them, Ram Keval Yadav, 35, and Mulchand Gupta, 38, were declared dead on arrival. The third worker, Rajesh Shahu, 25, has been transferred to the ICU of Sion hospital, and is in a critical condition with severe injuries to his head and back.

Police investigations are on to ascertain whether the driver fell asleep at the wheel, or if the accident occurred due to a mechanical failure. “Yadav did not run away from the spot. We later put him through a medical test, which found that he was not drunk,” said Senior Inspector Ashok Kadam of Kherwadi Police Station. The police seized the Tavera and registered a case under Section 279 (rash driving), 304A (causing death due to negligence and 338 (causing grievous hurt) of the IPC along with Section 184 (driving dangerously) of the Motor Vehicles Act against Yadav. He was produced before a metropolitan court later in the day, and released on bail.

Meanwhile, the police informed the relatives of the deceased who are coming from Uttar Pradesh to claim the bodies.
